Taken to the Angela Peralta Theatre, once again, Ana Cecilia Corona outdoes herself by bringing Arthur Saint- Leon’s 1870's ballet classic Coppélia, to the stage through circus form. Colorful costumes and aerial apparatuses such as trapezes, hoops and silks, fill the stage, and the students of GravityWorks School of the New Circus Arts (Escuela de las Nuevas Artes Circenses) bring energy to the room. These kids portray the story of Franz who falls in love with a life sized doll and his fiancé, Swanilda, attempts to win him back. Amongst all the floor choreography, acting and costume changes, their aerial performance will leave the viewer in amazement and on the edge of their seat. As a GravityWorks aerial teacher myself, I have recently come back to Mexico to help get the show on the road - in this case on stage - but do not take any credit for this spectacular performance! I myself was stunned watching these routines during rehearsals that have been clearly practiced for quite some time. Ana Cecilia puts in the effort to not only choreograph, design costumes, and create an entire performance on her own, but she also has her students rehearse extra days in order to, yet again, put on a fantastic show. She is having me be the motionless doll who unknowingly steals Franz’s heart and I couldn’t be more honored to be a part of the story even though I won’t be doing much. There will be three opportunities to come see this fun, brilliant display on March 6th, 7th and 8th at the Angela Peralta Theatre. Tickets will be sold at the theatre’s box office.
